MINKA SICKLINGER *amsterdam*

When I was little, I wanted to be an archaeologist or anthropologist. My curiosity about humanity — and how we mark time, pain, love, and transformation through ritual — was sparked by the stacks of National Geographic magazines scattered around my childhood home. I’d pore over them for hours, dreaming of faraway places and the wonder they held.

As I grew older, I realized those careers weren’t quite the glamorous adventures that my childhood obsession with Indiana Jones had led me to believe. The reality was more library than jungle, so I began to explore elsewhere.

After studying photography in Australia, I found my way into fashion, working as a stylist with dreams of moving to New York and making it big. I made the move, but the reality of navigating the NYC subway with piles of garment bags in rain, snow and summer humidity quickly made me realize it was time for a change. In 2009, I was unexpectedly rerouted — drawn into tattooing, where I found myself holding the responsibility of creating ritual for others, and learning one of the oldest forms of human expression and adornment. I spent the next 16 years honing my craft in some of New York’s best known tattoo shops and building a solid clientele.

My training in photography taught me the fundamentals of composition, as well as how to capture the subtle drama of movement, gesture, and emotional expression. Years of styling trained my eye to understand how garments move and fall across the body. That instinct now guides how I design and place tattoos, ensuring they move with the body, not against it.

I see tattooing as a form of alchemy — a process that transforms the body through intention, ritual, and permanence. It’s the act of turning flesh into symbol and transience into meaning. Each piece alters not only the surface of the skin, but the way we inhabit and relate to ourselves.

My style leans toward stylized naturalism in black and grey, inspired by the natural world, antiquity, and everyday objects that hold unexpected meaning. Over the years I’ve worked almost exclusively as a custom artist, translating individual ideas into something deeply personal. I’m a listener by nature, and I genuinely value the collaborative process — shaping something considered, symbolic, and lasting. Since relocating to Amsterdam in 2025 I now also offer curated and customizable flash designs for those who want something ready-made.

My work often explores themes of duality — presence and absence, protection and vulnerability, the material and the mythic — always rooted in transformation and human connection.

I can’t wait to work with you!
